Past Journey: From Kiruna to Malmö, summer 2019
A comfortable way to warm up to long bike packing trip! To cycle across Sweden in the summer has many advantages: without it being too warm, we will see how vegetation changes along the way from sub-arctic to mild continental climate. Also, it will never be completely dark. Up in Lapland we will even see the midnight sun (the sun does not go under the horizon!).
Another advantage is the Swedish law called “Allemansrätt”, which means that anyone has the right to roam land, lakes, and rivers for recreation and exercise. We would not worry so much about finding a place to pitch a tent because we are free to roam! It will be like a modern version of the story, Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige. But with bikes, a Trangia, and a tent! Sweden is not just Stockholm! We are proud that 70% of our land consists of forests and that their beauty is world famous.
We begin in Kiruna where houses were moved close to iron ore deposits. Now that they have been extracting land, there is the risk of the city center collapsing. To cross the Polar Circle in 20 degrees – Lapland often has fine summers! Continuing the trip along the Gulf of Bothnia and visiting small towns in Norrbotten and Västerbotten county, we then begin our way inland towards the city of Örebro. Cycling further through Smålands county where many famous Swedes come from: Ingvar Kamprad, Astrid Lindgren, Agnetha Fältskog, to name a few. We then end the trip in Skåne county which is both culturally and linguistically closer to continental Europe.
